We'll Win Tonight
Many athletes sit in the dressing room and say they are going to win the next game, but it is often false bravado linked to hope that teammates will deliver that inspiring performance. Not Mark Messier. In 1994 he said his New York Rangers were going to win, then he went out and dominated every corner of that rink, scoring three goals and setting a world standard for sports leadership.

Rule 72
Pre-game warm-ups are an essential part of every game. The players have a light skate to prepare their bodies for the impending battle and the goalies have one final chance to work on miniscule improvements. It’s light and easy, but of course in the playoffs nothing is light and easy. Think back to 1987 and a playoff match between the Canadiens and the Flyers.

Fleury's Celebration
Go to the rink any day and watch the kids react to a goal. The goal scorer thrusts his arms into the air, maybe does a little dance as he shows his excitement. It’s expected, the parents smile and his teammates laugh. But sometimes those celebrations get too exuberant, and sometimes the opponent seeks revenge. Think 1991 and a playoff series between the Flames and the Oilers.

Winning without Wayne
The word dynasty was rightfully applied to the Edmonton Oilers of the late 1980s. Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Jurri Kurri, Grant Fuhr and many others. Then there was the trade and Gretzky was an opponent, wearing the sweater of the Los Angeles Kings. The hockey world wondered if the Oilers would ever again be great. The 1990 playoffs answered the question.

Bring on Overtime
Sometimes it seems as if a team is destined to win. Instead of the puck bouncing an inch to the right away from the blade of a stick it goes straight, right to the best shooter on the team. A goalie is wildly out of position but a sure goal is prevented by a fluke deflection. That’s the way it was in overtime for the 1993 Montreal Canadiens when they could do nothing wrong.

Close games are the norm when two teams are battling to win the Stanley Cup. Unfortunately everyone in the country saw went wrong for Steve Smith in 1986.

It all started in 1952 with these famous hockey words “Hello Canada and hockey fans in the United States.” The voice of Foster Hewitt as he launched the first broadcast of Hockey Night in Canada. The words and the format have changed, but the vision remains the same.

Athletes have a bad habit of staying on too long. They often don’t seem to know when to make the graceful exit that will keep their reputation strong, but fortunately there are exceptions. Scotty Bowman certainly knew when it was his time to leave.

Crosby is down
It’s a tough, sometimes mean spirited game. Players expect to get hit hard, shake it off and come back for more. In other times a hit to the head was like getting a cut in the face. You get sewn up and head back to the ice on the next shift. Until one of the game’s greatest stars goes down and isn’t able to come back for more.

The lopsided smile of a hockey player who has had a few chicklets knocked out used to be an NHL calling card. The modern orthodontist has all but eliminated the image, but players are still spitting teeth in the middle of combat. Ryan Smyth may be the best example.

A slap shot skimming by a goalie’s ear is just a part of today’s game. Not so when Bobby Hull, the Golden Jet, wound up and let it fly. It’s no understatement to say in the days before goalie masks, they feared his every shot.
